Migrant Workers
Our presentation deals with the topic “migrant workers” with a special focus on Asia. First of all we had to attend to the term “migrant workers” itself and found out that there are different definition based on each National perspective.
By doing researches concerning the reasons and benefits of migration we learned how the treatment of those workers is to be managed in different countries and also that working and living conditions are important aspects. Migrant workers are on the one hand seasonal workers but also stay temporary at a place. Working on fields and in agricultural productions, allows them to send home their wages, which are often low pays, but still a support for their families back home. We also report about different cases of abuse, especially on women and in generell how migrant workers often get exploited.
Of course the whole topic has a huge amount of given informations, facts, numbers and dates, we decided to set a limit, by refering to Asia, especially Chinese migrant workers. On the one hand Asian workers in America (Asian Americans) but also on the other hand, workers in Asia. We tried to refer to a current topic and by that found the case study: Olympic Games 2008.
Be it the news or any other television, during the time of the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing, people actually never got confronted with the topic “migrant workers in China”. About 90% of the Olympic builders were migrant workers from other Asian countries but nobody cared about their living or working conditions during this time. By tiping in terms like “migrant workers” and “Olympic Games 2008″ you directly get a link to the official homepage of “Olympic Games in Beijing”. There of course the hosts and other person in charge tried to present a good image, especially in terms of “migrant workers”. They uploaded pictures of smiling workers while they were working on huge buildings like the “water cube” or their food and dormitory supplies. But this is only a given view on the positive aspects, which weren´t accomplished for all workers! Our conclusion is basically that during our research and actuall working process we received only negative views in terms of “treatment on migrant workers” (most of the time). Also the American view of Asian migrant workers again cast a damning light on America dealing with the term migrant workers. America as a nation of immigration was a most occured aspect during our research and actuall presentation.

Children Of Men
- the movie takes place in the year 2027
-since 18 years, no woman has been pregnantà women are no longer able to give birth to a baby
- therefore all over the world chaos predominates and great Britain is the only organised society
- this is the reason why many refugees want to immigrate into the country but the government tries to prevent this à the illegal immigrants are arrested and brought into camps and also killed by the government
- there is a underground group called “the fishes” wanting to improve the situation of the immigrants (the government calls them terrorists)
In our podcast, Julianne, the leader of “the fishes”, calls the “Human Project”, a ship concealed as cutter where scientists want to find out how infertility can be cured, because she has surprising news…
Scientist: Hello?
Julianne: Hello, it’s me Julianne. I’m the leader of the activist-group “Fishes”. We’ve already talked….
Scientist: So how is the situation in London?
Julianne: The situation is getting worse. Great Britain is now under military control, but everything still is in chaos. Millions of refugees are killed in the most brutal way in the refugees camps. All the people of our organization are chased and treated like terrorists…
Scientist: I’ve heard about it … and how do the people cope with the death of our baby Diego?
Julianne: The people are hopeless and sad, now that the youngest boy on earth dies at the age of 18. 18 years of infertility.
Scientist: I’ve to admit that it is still a misery for us. Although we have the latest technology on our bout, we can’t find the reason why women can’t get pregnant anymore.
Julianne: That’s why I wanted to talk to you urgently. There is still some more hope left, but I need your help. I’m in contact with a refugee called Key…. We are hiding her, it’s important to get her on your boat, because it’s the only place, where she will be save.
Scientist: I understand, you want to protect her, but “Human Project” is not mend to put up anybody , who’s in danger.
Julianne: She is not just anybody, she’s our only hope: SHE IS PREGNANT!!!
Scientist: I’ve always hoped, that this day will come, when can you bring her.
Julianne: I will call as soon as everything is arranged. If everything works out, we will meet at the secret point in 4 days.
Scientist: Be sure we will be there, and good luck to you!

Working Methods
Duelling Titans We (Marina and Mi) both worked on the article “Duelling Titans”, which is basically about China and America´s global supremacy and the competition between both superpowers. The whole article deals with an extensive topic and it contains a lot of information so we decided to focuse on China. Of course we also worked with the internet and a word document, just to collect the huge sum of given information. While reading the article we wrote down some important phrases and keywords from the text and paragraphs which are definetly worth mentioning. Furthermore parts and vocabulary which still seemed unknown, so that we now were able to look them up, by using google oder any other resources. We tried to devide the whole text into different sub-items.First of all we started finding out more about China, the country in generell and then informed us about the development- their economy and why they are actually able to compete against a powerful country like the United States. Our conclusion : Working on this article was already really complex and we´re neither business nor economy genes so we were trying to make the most of it.The whole topic “Globalization” is a very extensive and wide-spread subject and it´s difficult to understand everything. It deals with so many aspects and it´s always up to date. And because of this, you really have to go after the news just to keep on with the constant changes, so that you are able to acquire the knowledge you actually need. On balance it is an important subject which you have to deal with and it can be interesting too, but it´s is definetly ever so much work.

Little girls from Sweden

And if you want these kind of dreams
It’s CalifornicationIt’s the edge of the world
And all of western civilization
The sun may rise in the East
At least it settles in the final location
It’s understood that Hollywood
sells CalifornicationPay your surgeon very well
To break the spell of aging
Celebrity skin is this your chin
Or is that war your waging[Chorus:]
First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of Californication
Dream of Californication
Marry me girl be my fairy to the world
Be my very own constellation
A teenage bride with a baby inside
Getting high on information
And buy me a star on the boulevard
It’s Californication
Space may be the final frontier
But it’s made in a Hollywood basement
Cobain can you hear the spheres
Singing songs off station to station
And Alderon’s not far away
It’s Californication
Born and raised by those who praise
Control of population everybody’s been there

I don’t mean on vacation
[Chorus]
Destruction leads to a very rough road
But it also breeds creation
And earthquakes are to a girl’s guitar
They’re just another good vibration
And tidal waves couldn’t save the world
From Californication
Pay your surgeon very well
To break the spell of aging
Sicker than the rest
There is no test
But this is what you’re craving
[Chorus]
My Working Methods
My working methods are very similar like I suppose from my clase mates. When I read the text about the apple story I marked the informations which I thought might be important or interesting. Afterwards I tried to make notes on a peace of paper of the things I remembered and I thought about it how to make it interesting e.g. with a main question on which the whole article is build up. After this is wrote my article based on the head question.
Facts about “The Apple”
Globalization is a contemporary issue nowadays and it supports especially the international in- and export. Germany is a big part of the export business and one of the things that are exported is the german apple.
Many different sorts of apples are grown everywhere in our country but the main territories are in Baden-Wüttenberg (around the Bodensee), Sachsen-Anhalt and near Hamburg ( “Altes Land”). In 2004 around 945,000 tons of apples have been harvested which made 80% of the whole fruit exchange. That would be really good for the national industry if people did not buy apples which are imported from China, Italy or Australia. Those apples might be a little cheaper but they’re also not as healthy as regional apples because of the long journey. The problem is people don’t buy different ones on purpose but just because they’re lying next to ours in the big supermarkets without any noticeable mark . Another interesting question would be why we import apples anyway if we have so many of them growing here? Kiwis, bananas or lemons are comprehendible but why apples? It’s not just a question of money but of C02-emission which has been often discussed lately. It makes no sense at all that we import from, for example New Zealand when every tenth apple that is eaten in Europ comes from Tirol.
And it’s not just the apples but other food, too so a simple solution would be to mark the nutriment clearly, so everyone can see where it’s from and could decide if they want to supporte the national industy and the environment by buying (if possible) german products.
The Box That Makes The World Go Round
About 50 years ago a man named Malcome McLean sailed from Port Newark, New Jersey to Texas. On board were about 58 trailers which later became the containers we know today. Nowadays more than 3,500 cargo ships are sailing around the seven oceans loaded with about 15 million containes every day. The boxes have become an important part of the new global economy. They are sailing Hong Kong to Los Angeles or Hamburg. Transporting goods like apples, wine, coffee and high tech stuff. Everything fits into the 20 feet long steel boxes which can holding up to 28 tons. And the business is still growing and rising.
